What Is A Composition Roof?

Composition is one of the most common roofing materials used in roofing today. You’ve most likely heard it referred to as its more technical name “asphalt shingles”. Composition is a nickname used by both roofing professionals and insurance companies, who will use this name on roof damage claims. But why is it called composition?

Why Is It Called Composition?

Asphalt shingle roofs are referred to by professionals as a composition roof because it is a composite of several different materials. Asphalt shingles are made up of a fiberglass mat that is overlaid with tar and granules. 

There are three different types of asphalt shingles: 3-tab, architectural, and luxury. The most commonly used shingle type in Maryland is the architectural shingles. How Long Does A Composition Roof Last?

The lifespan of a composition roof is dependent on a variety of factors, the most important being the type of shingles that you have. 3-tab shingles have the shortest lifespan of the three, lasting only up to 25 years. Architectural shingles and luxury shingles have a lifespan of around 30 years, with luxury shingles having a lifespan of up to 50 years under ideal weather conditions and with routine maintenance. These lifespans are only possible if your roof was properly installed by an experienced roofing professional and if your attic has quality ventilation. 

While it may not seem like it, your roof is like any other appliance in your home. It needs to be routinely inspected, cleaned, and maintained. Since your composition roof is on the exterior of your home, it is much more susceptible to damage brought on by natural circumstances such as severe weather, and unforeseen accidents such as fallen debris or trees. That is why we recommend that you have your roof inspected twice a year, because most cases of roof damage occur long periods of time because of homeowners neglecting proper inspection and maintenance.
