TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin, which is a form of single-ply roofing membrane. There are two main types of membranes for roofing: Thermoplastic and thermoset. The difference between thermoplastic and thermoset membranes is their chemical composition, which gives each membrane their own unique benefits.
One of TPO’s most prominent characteristics is that it is laminated. This means that the top of a TPO membrane is a different material than the bottom. Because TPO membranes are laminated, points of weakness on the membrane can potentially increase over time.

TPO is a single-ply membrane, which means that it is installed without multiple layers. The membrane can be attached by mechanically attaching, ballasting, plate bonding or adhering.
