When you are in the market for a roof replacement, there are many things that you need to keep track of. But to be in the best position as a homeowner, it is important that you familiarize yourself with as much of the terminology as possible. So, what does TPO stand for in roofing?
What Does TPO Stand For In Roofing?
TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin, which is a form of single-ply roofing membrane. There are two main types of membranes for roofing: Thermoplastic and thermoset. The difference between thermoplastic and thermoset membranes is their chemical composition, which gives each membrane their own unique benefits.
One of TPO’s most prominent characteristics is that it is laminated. This means that the top of a TPO membrane is a different material than the bottom. Because TPO membranes are laminated, points of weakness on the membrane can potentially increase over time.
TPO is a single-ply membrane, which means that it is installed without multiple layers. The membrane can be attached by mechanically attaching, ballasting, plate bonding or adhering. Depending on the manufacturer, your TPO could be adhered by using a low-rise urethane foam if you opt for TPO with Fleeceback.
Rolls of TPO are about 8 feet wide by 50-100 feet long, on average. This is a relatively small size, which will result in a number of seams. These seams will be the weakest part, as they are with any roofing system. Many of these membranes try to compensate for these weak points by making TPO’s thick. TPO’s are typically 45-60 millimeters thick, with some manufacturers providing additional thicknesses of up to 90 millimeters.
