What is blue green algae?

You may see it in your neighborhood, but those black or dark brown stains on a roof are not just from mold, mildew, or moss. It can oftentimes be caused by tiny bacteria commonly referred to as blue green algae. Its proper name is called Gloeocapsa magma and it travels through the wind. Which means that if your neighbors have it, chances are you have it as well. It often appears on the north and west sides of a house and thrives in moist environments. There is no scientific evidence that the algae damage your asphalt shingles but it can certainly affect the appearance and value of your home.
