This Slate Blue Metal Roof Transforms American Legion Pavilion in Hampstead, MD project gave a well-used community gathering space a much-needed upgrade before the busy summer season. With the existing asphalt shingle roof showing significant signs of aging and water-related deterioration, American Legion Post 200 partnered with Roof Right to install a durable new metal roofing system designed to complement the property while providing long-term protection for years of future events and activities.

On a red shingled roof, a white vent boot is installed with a hammer, pry bar, and pliers nearby; worker's shoes visible at bottom.

Slate Blue Metal Roof: Project Overview

Community pavilions often see years of exposure to sun, rain, snow, and changing temperatures without the same level of attention that residential roofs receive. In this case, the original asphalt shingle roof had reached the point where natural aging and wear were beginning to compromise the structure beneath.

Because the pavilion serves as an important gathering place for events and activities throughout the year, completing the project before summer was a priority. The Legion needed a roofing system that would not only solve the immediate issues but also provide dependable protection for decades of future use.

After evaluating the structure, the decision was made to replace the aging shingle roof with a durable metal roofing system that would better withstand the elements while matching other buildings on the property.

Removing Damaged Materials & Rebuilding the Roof Deck

Once work began, our crew removed the existing roofing materials and quickly discovered that portions of the roof decking had suffered water damage over time. Before a new roofing system could be installed, the compromised decking needed to be replaced to create a solid foundation for the project.

After installing new decking, our team covered the roof surface with synthetic underlayment. This layer provides an additional level of moisture protection beneath the finished roofing system and helps protect the structure from wind-driven rain and other weather-related challenges.

Addressing the damaged decking during the replacement process ensured the new roof would be built on a strong and reliable foundation rather than simply covering over existing issues.

AB Martin Slate Blue Metal Roofing

The Legion selected an AB Martin 28-gauge corrugated metal roofing system in Slate Blue to match the other metal-roofed structures on the property. While durability was a major factor in the decision, appearance was equally important.

The Slate Blue color gave the pavilion a clean, polished look that immediately elevated the space while maintaining consistency across the grounds. Against the freshly painted red wood structure, the new roof creates a striking contrast that helps the pavilion stand out as a centerpiece for gatherings, cookouts, and community events.

In addition to its appearance, metal roofing offers significant long-term advantages for structures like this pavilion. Compared to traditional asphalt shingles, metal roofing provides exceptional durability, longevity, and resistance to the weather extremes that Maryland properties experience throughout the year.

The combination of updated roofing materials, improved ventilation, restored decking, and fresh paint transformed the pavilion into a space that looks ready for another generation of community events.

Ventilation & Finishing Details

To complete the installation, our team installed a vented ridge system to help improve airflow beneath the metal roof. Proper ventilation helps reduce heat buildup and moisture accumulation while contributing to the long-term performance of the roofing system.

As a finishing touch, the newly installed wood components were painted red to match the pavilion’s original appearance. This detail helped preserve the familiar character of the structure while pairing perfectly with the new Slate Blue roof.

Signs a Pavilion or Outdoor Structure May Need a New Roof

Outdoor structures often show warning signs when their roofing systems begin reaching the end of their lifespan. Common indicators include:

  • Missing or deteriorated shingles
  • Visible water damage to roof decking
  • Soft or rotted wood components
  • Frequent maintenance or repairs
  • Rusting or failing roofing materials
  • Interior water intrusion
  • Sagging roof sections
  • Roofs approaching the end of their expected service life

Addressing these issues early can help prevent more extensive structural repairs in the future.
