This Manchester Roof Replacement Upgrades 24-Year-Old Roofing System project gave this heavily wooded Maryland home a major exterior upgrade using CertainTeed Landmark PRO shingles in the Max Def Burnt Sienna color. More than two decades after Roof Right originally installed the home’s previous roof, the homeowner returned to our team once again for a full roof replacement featuring updated waterproofing methods, improved chimney protection, and modern roofing system upgrades.

Manchester Roof Replacement: Project Overview

Roof Right originally replaced this roof approximately 24 years ago, making this project especially rewarding for our team. Over the years, the home’s heavily wooded surroundings exposed the roof to constant debris buildup, moisture retention, and natural weathering from changing Maryland seasons. While the original roof provided decades of protection, the shingles had reached the point where long-term replacement made more sense than continued repairs.

Homes located in wooded environments often experience accelerated roof aging due to trapped moisture, falling branches, leaf accumulation, and reduced sunlight exposure. These conditions can wear down roofing materials faster over time, particularly around valleys, chimney transitions, and lower roof sections where debris tends to collect.

The homeowner wanted a new roofing system that would not only refresh the appearance of the home, but also incorporate modern installation improvements developed over the last two decades.

Tear-Off & Roofing System Upgrades

Once the existing roofing materials were removed, our crew inspected the roof decking beneath and replaced several damaged plywood sections before rebuilding the roofing system. Addressing compromised decking during a roof replacement is important because shingles can only perform as well as the surface beneath them.

After preparing the decking, our team installed Ice and Water Shield in vulnerable areas of the roof, followed by synthetic underlayment across the remaining roof surface. Compared to older felt paper systems commonly used decades ago, modern synthetic underlayment offers improved durability, moisture resistance, and tear protection during severe weather conditions.

Our crew also replaced a bathroom exhaust vent as part of the project to help maintain proper attic ventilation and improve overall roof system performance.

Chimney Cricket Installation & Leak Prevention

One of the most important upgrades on this Manchester roof replacement involved the addition of chimney crickets behind both chimneys on the home. Twenty-four years ago, chimney crickets were not as consistently incorporated into residential roofing systems as they are today, particularly on smaller chimney structures.

A chimney cricket is a small peaked structure installed behind the chimney to help divert water and debris around the penetration instead of allowing it to collect against the uphill side of the masonry. Without proper drainage in these areas, water can begin pooling behind the chimney over time, increasing the risk of leaks and flashing deterioration.

Because this home sits within a heavily wooded area where leaves and debris frequently accumulate, adding chimney crickets was an especially valuable long-term waterproofing upgrade.

CertainTeed Landmark PRO Max Def Burnt Sienna Shingles

To complete the transformation, the homeowner selected CertainTeed Landmark PRO shingles in the Max Def Burnt Sienna color. The Burnt Sienna shingles brought a rich dimensional appearance to the home that paired especially well with the wooded surroundings and natural tones of the property.

Landmark PRO shingles are designed with enhanced dimensionality and Max Definition color blending technology, helping create greater visual depth across the roof surface compared to standard architectural shingles. The finished roof immediately gave the home a more updated and refined appearance while still fitting naturally within its wooded setting.

Compared to the weathered roof that had protected the home for more than two decades, the final result delivered both stronger weather protection and a dramatic curb appeal upgrade.

Signs You May Be Ready For A Manchester Roof Replacement

Even well-installed roofing systems eventually begin showing signs of aging over time. Homeowners should watch for issues such as:

  • Granule loss
  • Curling or brittle shingles
  • Frequent roof debris buildup
  • Moss or algae growth
  • Aging chimney flashing
  • Interior water staining
  • Missing shingles after storms
  • Roofs approaching or exceeding 20 years old

Homes located in wooded areas often require especially close monitoring due to increased moisture exposure and debris accumulation.
