This Baltimore Rowhouse Roof Repair Prevents Future Wind Damage project involved replacing a section of shingles that had blown off during a severe wind event, exposing the underlayment below and leaving the roof vulnerable to additional damage. The team at Roof Right not only restored the missing roofing materials, but also corrected the underlying installation issue that caused the shingles to fail in the first place.

On a red shingled roof, a white vent boot is installed with a hammer, pry bar, and pliers nearby; worker's shoes visible at bottom.

Project Overview

The homeowner contacted our team after high winds tore a large section of asphalt shingles from the edge of their Baltimore rowhouse roof. Because the shingles detached in one large sheet and folded back over themselves, the exposed underlayment became highly visible from the street and created immediate concerns about both curb appeal and water protection.

When our team inspected the damaged area, we discovered that the previous roof installation had not been properly fastened along the rake edge. In high-wind conditions, edge shingles experience some of the greatest uplift pressure on the entire roofing system. Without adequate fastening, the shingles were unable to resist the wind load, allowing the nails to fail and the roofing material to peel back from the roof edge.

Rather than simply patching over the visible damage, our crew focused on correcting the underlying cause of the failure to help prevent the problem from happening again during future storms.

Repair Process & Material Selection

To begin the repair, our team carefully removed the damaged shingles and compromised underlayment from the affected roof section. Because wind-driven movement can weaken surrounding materials, the repair area was extended beyond the visibly damaged shingles to ensure a secure tie-in with the existing roofing system.

New synthetic underlayment was then installed, overlapping with the existing materials to maintain proper water-shedding protection beneath the shingles. Synthetic underlayment offers improved tear resistance and durability compared to traditional felt paper, especially in areas vulnerable to wind exposure along roof edges.

Once the underlayment was secured, our crew installed new CertainTeed XT25 shingles in the Timber Blend color to closely match the existing roof. Although the replacement shingles were the correct manufacturer color, newly installed asphalt shingles rarely appear identical to older roofing immediately after installation. Over time, exposure to sunlight, weather, and natural aging will allow the repaired section to blend more consistently with the surrounding roof surface.

Preventing Future Wind-Related Shingle Failure

One of the most important parts of this Baltimore roof repair involved reinforcing the vulnerable rake edge where the original failure occurred. To improve wind resistance, our team installed additional fasteners along the outer-most shingle edge and sealed the shingles directly to the drip edge using roof cement.

This added reinforcement helps prevent wind from catching and lifting the shingle edges during future storms, reducing the likelihood of the shingles folding back and peeling away from the roof structure again.

Small edge failures like this can quickly become much larger roofing problems if left unaddressed. Once shingles lift and expose the underlayment below, water intrusion and additional wind damage can spread rapidly across surrounding roof sections.

Signs Your Roof May Have Wind Damage

After strong storms or high wind events, homeowners should watch for warning signs such as:

  • Missing shingles along roof edges
  • Folded or lifted shingles
  • Exposed underlayment
  • Loose roofing debris in the yard
  • Visible nail pops
  • Shingles flapping during windy conditions
  • Granule loss near damaged sections
  • Water stains appearing inside the home

Addressing wind damage early can help prevent more extensive repairs and protect the overall integrity of the roofing system.
