Addressing a Leaking Skylight

Skylights are a fantastic way to bring additional natural light into your home. However, as your skylight gets older, your skylight may begin to bring unwanted things into your home as well. Not only are skylights prone to leaks, these leaks often lead to significant property damage due to the placement of skylights on a roof. If you are experiencing a skylight leak, we at Roof Right are here to help. Here is a step by step walkthrough of how to fix a leaking skylight.

Leaky Skylight

Dealing with a Leaking Skylight

The most important thing to do in the event of any roof leak is to give your roof a thorough inspection. The first step is to make sure that this leak is actually coming from your skylight. There are many elements of your roof that can cause leaking, so it’s important to investigate as much as possible rather than make assumptions. It’s important to see if the water is coming through the skylight itself or through the flashing around the perimeter of the skylight.  Skylights create a dam on the roof and prevent water from running down the roof.

Leaves, helicopters or pine needles can pile up behind the skylight and cause water to run sideways and in between the shingles.  Sometimes cleaning debris from the roof can solve the problem.  In some instances, replacing the the flashing around the skylight can be an option but more often than not, replacing the skylight is the best option.  Skylights are typically warranted for 10 years and it’s always best practice to replace skylights if you are replacing your roof.
