Replacing shingles that have been damaged by weather or fallen tree limbs is relatively easy and affordable. However, unless you are using leftover shingles from your current roof, the replacement shingles may not match your existing shingles. That said, having shingles that don’t match is a small price to pay to extend the life of your roof.

Partial Reroofing

If you have moderate to severe damage that is only on one side of the roof, it may be more cost effective to opt for a partial replacement. A partial replacement can cost thousands of dollars less than a full replacement, and it will be easier to blend the shingle colors than it is with a traditional patch job. However, partial replacements are not always ideal as their are economies of scale that may make it make more sense to replace the whole roof.  It depends on the design of the roof and what it ties into.

While the roof may be able to be repaired, it may make more sense to replace it.  Any material that is installed on a repair project will literally get thrown in the trash can when you roof does get replaced so while it costs more upfront, in the long run saves money.  It may be less expensive to do this, since you are only paying for labor costs for one complete package, instead of paying twice. It’s important to think about what is best for your roof as well as your pocket. Tear Off?

If you have decided to reroof, you will need to decide if you are going to tear off the existing roof or if you are going to install your new roof over the existing one. If you already have two layers of shingles on your roof, you are not allowed to put on another layer. If you live in an area with high winds, it may be best to opt for tearing off your current roof, because shingles that are directly fastened to the roof decking will be much more secure in the event of heavy winds.
